Light Before the Dawn (Kalamazoo Mandala, July 2001)
Light Before the Dawn is an irrational picture of the situation and an ancient
way to depict the interplay of conflicting and balancing forces in the community.
It was the first time I had drawn a mandala to portray a client's mess. My inner
voice told me it was a good thing to do. I hoped the mandala would be a container
for the irrationality in the system - that it would take their conflicts and pain
and dignify the struggle by giving them meaning and beauty. I wanted to mystify
them. I wanted to engage their unconscious. I wanted to lift them above their mess.
