Turning Fear Into Energy Our Unrational Leadership Process

The most poignant lesson of the Wall Street meltdown is that our leaders must learn how to lead differently. In the coming years, flocks of committees will study the meltdown, spending millions, perhaps billions of taxpayer dollars identifying what went wrong. But given our past, it's unlikely that any expert will recognize one of the critical causes: Our worn out leadership process.

To meet the biggest challenges of today and tomorrow, we need a new leadership process, one that prompts us to leave Comfortopia behind. And Project Innovations has created it. Unrational Leadership uses "rational" and "irrational" techniques designed to overcome psychological resistance to change and achieve uncommon results. It combines left and right brain functions, and is based on five principles:

  • Start all problem-solving by taking personal responsibility.
  • Aim at increasing energy, not just efficiency.
  • Confront and partner with the unconscious.
  • Creativity drives change.
  • Look two generations behind and two generations ahead.

Unrational leaders constantly assess and change their own personalities to meet a fast changing world. They see their personalities as their most important resource to meet the complexities of a new, global reality. Many leaders see their personalities as fixed, unwilling to change and believe that everyone else needs to change. Unrational leaders discipline themselves to take personal responsibility, increase energy, confront their unconscious by asking what they need to change, creatively solve problems, and envision results fifty to one hundred years ahead.

Tragically, leaders who refuse to adapt are the new dinosaurs. As long as the environment cooperated, dinosaurs could roam the earth and have their way. Unfortunately, the global environment will no longer tolerate leaders who are unwilling to adapt. There is too much complexity in the world to rationally gather and analyze the facts necessary to run it. There are too many stakeholders in our global economy to rely on rigid hierarchies.
