Unrational Leadership™:
The Magic Bullet for Solving Regional Problems
By Charles Fleetham
Successful regional collaboration is achieved by the marriage
of a clear vision and teamwork. Throughout this newsletter
you will read stories of how Project Innovations has helped
communities build teams and sharpen their vision. In many
cases the chief players already had a common vision, but
old habits and grudges clouded these normally civic-minded
leaders' ability to stay focused on their primary ambition.
These battles, often well publicized, make the pursuit of a
regional goal daunting.
Today, global competition for business and taxpayer cries for
efficiency are forcing municipal leaders between the proverbial
rock and a hard place. The more these leaders restrain taxes
to please citizens and contain rising costs, the fewer incentives
(tax breaks, infrastructure investments,
shared resources) they can use to lure businesses to their communities.
Pooling resources and talent through regional collaboration
is one of the last magic bullets in the holster of the municipal
leader.
Unrational Leadership™ is our unique process for
training leaders to solve problems that defy reason-like
achieving regional collaboration. Unrational Leadership™
helps leaders learn how to recognize and work through
the psychological baggage and irrational forces that hinder
or destroy regional cooperation. Project Innovations has
applied these techniques successfully-at affordable prices-in
communities throughout Michigan as well as in other parts
of the nation. Keep reading to learn how you can lead your
community to greater prosperity and preserve your future.

Unrationally Yours,

Ask
the Unrationalist Dear Unrationalist,
I am a supervisor for a northwestern state department. I'm a pretty
upbeat and optimistic guy but work is getting me down. In
fact, work is getting in the way of my work. My co-workers
are fundamentally pessamistic. Nobody wants to do anything
creative or step outside of the lines of their job
description. Plus I often feel that the energy is negative,
even angry sometimes. I find it exhausting to be at work.
What can I do?

Stuck In A Government Energy Sinkhole |
Dear Stuck,
The bureaucracy and red tape of a government agency often
stagnates the energy within its workers. If they don't feel
trusted, they don't feel their knowledge and skills are
being honored. The first step is to tap your own creative
energy and then to tap the creative energy within your
team. You could have them write poetry or have the group
draw a picture of what the organization feels like to
them.

Mandalas-Tools for Regional Growth
A mandala, which means magic circle in Hindu, is a circle
divided into four sections with a smaller circle in the center
Carl Jung saw the mandala structure in every culture. It echoes
in European cathedrals, old government buildings, Native American
art, in the design of great cities like Paris and sometimes,
in your dreams. Mandalas synthesize information but they are
also art. Their colors and images engage a non-rational
piece of your personality. You might say they delight the
soul. Jung believed that drawing mandalas helped his clients
knit fragments of their personalities together. Project
Innovations believes the mandala can achieve the same affect
for regionsKalamazoo and Syracuse are two good examples.
Project Innovations has also used the mandala successfully
in several organizational settings.
