The Search for Unrational Leadership™
by Charles Fleetham
Rationalism, our greatest strength for 500 years, is turning
into a weakness. Now, the only way our civilization can sustain
itself is by tapping our irrational mind. Our forefathers planted
the Age of Reason in our land and used the fruits to build a
great nation. We have the world's strongest military, best education,
most productive farmers, and most-admired political system,
but our way of life is endangered—not by loose morals,
not by rapacious capitalists, not even by the terrorists. Our
world is threatened by the same rational methods that we used
to build it.
Blindly, we pursue rational goals with rational methods and
reap unintended and potentially disastrous consequences. A classic
example of unintended consequences is occurring in the Great
Lakes. Governments opened up the Great Lakes to ocean freighters
to strengthen the economy. These freighters have dumped new
and invasive species into the waters. The result: Destruction
of natural fisheries. Now, as we face the challenge of saving
the Great Lakes, we say that people have made a series of shortsighted
decisions or that we are waiting for the right political leadership.
What we don't say is that the method we used to pursue our goals—rationalism—is
the problem.
For years, this kind of looming crisis has preyed on the mind
of Charlie Fleetham. After a decade of intense experimentation,
he developed Unrational Leadership™. According to Fleetham,
it is leadership that uses both rational and irrational methods
to achieve a desired outcome. Don't let the word "irrational"
turn you off! Unrational Leadership™ does not
overthrow reason. It balances reason
with small, manageable doses of irrationality and inoculates
and protects you against the plagues of unintended consequences
that are sweeping through our organizations and world.
